Training on the correct segregation of waste to ensure that only
health care risk waste items are placed into medical waste containers
is important. Often items such as ordinary paper, beverage cans and
other types of general waste are incorrectly placed in the health care
risk waste stream. These items are not classified as HCR
waste and can result in an increase in the institution's disposal
costs as health care risk waste is charged at a higher disposal rate
